For nearly eight years — in neighborhoods as diverse as Belmont/Mantua, Kensington, Mifflin Square, Oxford Square and Tacony — Mural Arts Philadelphia has been exploring the idea of neighborhood-based art studios and artist residencies as an approach to promoting community resiliency and connecting with individuals in need of support services. Other organizations in Philadelphia, and in cities as diverse as Kansas City, New York, Pittsburgh and Vancouver, are exploring similar models.
Join muraLAB for a conversation among artists who are leading these path-breaking projects. We’ll explore how these spaces can connect with individuals and strengthen community networks; serve as an open space for artists, communities and individuals to interact; allow artists to evolve their practices while exploring and responding to the unique needs of each community, and more.
