The Montgomery County, Md., public art program dates back three decades, and in its time was one of the most vigorous public art programs anywhere, with streams of new works commissioned by the County and by private developers.

In 2014, Bressi completed a review of the program and created a Roadmap to determine how it can dedicate its finite resources to the needs of a community whose profile has changed dramatically, align with County policy and capital development priorities, and take into account broad new directions in public art that have emerged since the program was launched.

Some of the key recommendations of the Roadmap are to focus efforts for integrated public art on the County’s emerging bus rapid transit system, which connects with communities underserved by the public art program; expand into environmental, temporary and placemaking commissions; and develop resources to support the wide array of organizations who are embracing public art as a tool to accomplish their missions.
