Troy Public Art Master Plan

The City of Troy has arrived at an exciting time in its history, with a resurgence of people and businesses interested in living there due to its rich cultural and architectural offerings, strong educational institutions, and expanding technology and innovation sectors.
Troy sought a public art plan to answer two key questions: how could a public-private partnership support arts activities that forefront the creative resources of the city, and how could Troy draw on those resources to enliven its public spaces, support its neighborhoods, and help attract new residents, tourism, and local businesses.
Community involvement was encouraged through two innovative ideas. “Troy Summer Square” was a street block adjacent to downtown’s main mini-park that was painted with a map of the city and turned over to pedestrians for three weeks. “Explore TroyAwards” mini-grants were given to a dozen creative ideas aimed at activating Summer Square, engaging people, and serving as a springboard to explore downtown beyond.
The plan has resulted in an ongoing partnership with the ArtsCenter of the Capitol Region, with new light and mural festivals.
